Hogback Irrigation System Improvement Project

Northern New Mexico Indigenous Farmers, Inc. (NNMIF) is working to restore reliable irrigation water to farmland in the Tse Daa K’aan (Hogback) Chapter of the Navajo Nation. The project will replace and modernize the Hogback Water Pumping Station and add a solar-powered system with energy storage.

The pumping station provides irrigation water to local farms along the Hogback Canal. The irrigation lines have not been updated since the 1960s, and approximately 2,000 acres of farmland have remained idle for years. The current pumping station also does not provide consistent water throughout the farming season, making it difficult for farmers to grow and harvest crops successfully.

This project will improve the reliability of the irrigation system and help bring idle farmland back into production. It will support local farmers, strengthen agriculture, and help improve food security and food sovereignty in the Hogback community.

NNMIF is made up of local farmers and community members who have worked toward restoring irrigation water to these fields. The project will help create opportunities for farmers to return their land to production and provide fresh, locally grown food for the community.

Hogback Pumping Station

The pumping station’s primary purpose is to provide irrigation water to local farms, orchards, pastures, and subdivisions along the canal. It serves as a critical resource for sustaining agriculture and supporting the local agricultural farmers in the Navajo Nation’s Tse Daa K’aan (Hogback) Chapter.
